They are not in competition, and they don't cancel each other out. Both are true at the same time, in the same person, which makes me — wait for it — *a woman with a male-typical body*. That's **operant conditioning with infinite stakes.** You don't behave because you love your neighbor; you behave because you're terrified of the consequences that never end. The church didn't want good people. It wanted *obedient* people — and obedience purchased with fear and bribery is the cheapest obedience there is. A parent who rules by "be good or you'll burn forever" isn't raising a child with character. A priest who rules that way isn't building a soul with faith. He's building a **compliance machine**. The conflation is *dead*, biologically and technologically. - **Same-sex couples** — gay and lesbian couples have sex constantly, with conception biologically impossible. It's still sex. It's still love. It's still everything. If sex were truly "about reproduction," gay sex wouldn't exist — and yet here we are, existing, loudly. The oldest complete New Testament manuscript we have — **Codex Sinaiticus** — includes the **Shepherd of Hermas** and the **Epistle of Barnabas**, books that later got cut. Even the earliest "complete" Bibles disagree with yours. ### So who decided? Not the Council of Nicaea — that's a myth. Nicaea (325) was about the *Trinity*, not the canon. The same. Overlapping at the same points, across cultures that never met. ### The flood The Bible's flood isn't original. The **Epic of Gilgamesh** (Mesopotamia, ~2100 BCE — *older* than Genesis) has Utnapishtim building a boat, taking animals two by two, sending out birds, landing on a mountain. There's the **Atrahasis** epic, the Hindu **Manu** and his fish, the Greek **Deucalion**, the Chinese **Nuwa**, flood stories in Mayan, Norse, Ojibwe, and a hundred other traditions. Every culture that ever lived near water has a "the world drowned and we survived" story. ### The dying-and-rising god **Osiris** (Egypt) — murdered, dismembered, resurrected. **Inanna/Ishtar** (Sumer) — descends to the underworld and returns. **Tammuz**, **Adonis**, **Attis** (who died and rose, on March 25), **Dionysus** (dismembered and reborn). These stories are all older than Christianity, and they're all the same shape as the resurrection. ### The miraculous birth **Horus** (born of the virgin-mother Isis), **Buddha** (his mother Maya dreamed a white elephant), **Krishna** (divine birth, miracles), **Heracles** (Zeus and a mortal), **Perseus** (Zeus and Danae), **Romulus** (Mars and Rhea Silvia), **Zoroaster** (his mother, a virgin, visited by a ray of light). Miraculous conception is the standard origin story of the divine hero — in every religion. ### The Golden Rule This one should make you emotional. It's in **every single major tradition**: - **Christianity** — "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (Matthew 7:12). - **Judaism** — Hillel: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor" (Talmud, Shabbat 31a). - **Islam** — "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself" (Hadith). - **Hinduism** — "Do not do to others what would cause pain to yourself" (Mahabharata). - **Buddhism** — "Hurt not others with that which pains yourself" (Udana-Varga). - **Confucianism** — "What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others" (Analects 15:23). - **Zoroastrianism**, **Jainism**, **Taoism**, the Stoics, the Egyptians — all of them. ### Even monotheism is a copy The Bible's God wasn't the first one god. **Akhenaten** tried monotheism in Egypt around **1350 BCE** — the Aten, the sun disk, one god, a hundred years before Moses. And here's the part that should make you gasp: **scholars widely believe Zoroastrianism shaped Judaism during the Babylonian exile.** Angels, Satan, heaven and hell, the final judgment, resurrection, the messiah — the whole afterlife furniture of the Bible shows up *only after* the Jews spent seventy years inside the Persian empire. My heaven-and-hell section? The concept was literally imported. The Persians had it first. ### So what does the overlap mean? Two options: 1. **They're all copies of each other / all human invention** — the skeptic's read. Every culture invented the same flood and the same dying god because humans are anxious about drowning and death. 2. **They all point at the same real thing** — the mystic's read. There's one underlying truth — the divine is real, death isn't the end, be good to each other — and God wrote it in every language because it's *true*, and truth is universal. I take option two. And here's the beautiful part: **Unitarian Christianity is the one theology that isn't threatened by the overlap — it's validated by it.** If one tribe's book is the only truth, then every other religion is a threat, and the flood myths and golden rules are embarrassing coincidences. But if the truth is universal — if God wrote the same lesson everywhere because it's the *same lesson* — then the overlap isn't a problem. It's the **proof**. A Unitarian doesn't have to explain why the Buddhists got the Golden Rule right; she gets to say "of course they did — it's true." Salvation through character, not creeds. Reason over dogma. Now imagine playing it for **fifteen hundred years**, in three languages, by hand, with no printing press, and you have the Bible. This isn't an insult. It's just *how books worked*. ### The chain The Bible was written over ~1,500 years by dozens of authors in **Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek**. Before it was written, it was **oral** — stories passed by word of mouth for generations (scholars think Matthew and Luke copied from Mark and a lost sayings source called Q — even the New Testament is a remix). Then it was copied by hand, thousands of times — we have **~5,800 Greek manuscripts** with **400,000+ textual variants**. Most are spelling. Some are... significant: - **Mark 16:9-20** — the resurrection appearances at the end of Mark? Not in the oldest manuscripts. Added later. - **John 7:53–8:11** — "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"? Not in the oldest manuscripts. Added later. The KJV followed. A single translation choice built the entire virgin-birth prophecy. He switched to his Roman name **Paulos/Paul** when he went to preach to the Greeks. The Bible itself documents it: "Saul, who was also called Paul" (Acts 13:9). The most prolific author of the New Testament wrote under a different name than the one he was born with. - The whole book is like this: **Abram→Abraham, Sarai→Sarah, Jacob→Israel, Simon→Peter** (*Kephas*, "rock"), **Joseph→Barnabas**. The heroes can't keep their names. Matthew wasn't necessarily named Matthew in Aramaic. The Twelve probably went by different names than the ones in your pew Bible. So: a translation of a translation, of hand-copied manuscripts, of oral stories, about people who didn't have the names you call them, in a book that literally can't agree with itself on what hell is. **That doesn't make it worthless.** It makes it *human* — the most human book ever assembled. The **Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian courts** (in Daniel 1, Daniel and his friends are literally placed in the charge of **Ashpenaz, "the master of the king's eunuchs"** — the Hebrew word is *saris*, and it's the same word used for the court officials). The **Chinese imperial palace** (for two thousand years — the great admiral **Zheng He** was a eunuch). The **Byzantine court** and the **Ottoman harem** (the Kizlar Agha, the chief black eunuch, was one of the most powerful men in the empire). The **Ethiopian court** — the official in Acts 8 was the treasurer of Queen Candace, and he's the one Philip baptized. ### The three kinds (Jesus's own classification) In **Matthew 19:12**, Jesus lists them: - **"Eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb"** — people born with nonstandard bodies. *Hello, trans people. You've always existed.* - **"Eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others"** — castrated by force: captives, slaves, punishment, court service. - **"Those who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven"** — the self-made ones: devotees, celibates, the religiously committed. And his verdict on all three: **"Let anyone accept this who can."** The man blessed the whole category, by name, in his own words. ### Why the Bible is obsessed with them (in the best way) In a fertility-obsessed culture — where your worth was your bloodline and your sons — the Bible keeps handing the eunuchs the *best* promises: **Isaiah 56** — God says eunuchs shouldn't call themselves "a dry tree," because God will give them "an everlasting name that shall not be cut off" — *better than sons and daughters*. **Acts 8** — the first VIP convert gets an angel sent to arrange the meeting. **Galatians 3:28** — "neither male nor female." The people whose bodies didn't fit the categories got the category-shattering promises. The trans people in the Bible aren't a footnote. Believing in God doesn't require believing the Bible is his stenography. - **The Bible without God** — historians, literary scholars, secular humanists. It's a masterpiece of world literature either way. You can love the book without believing its theology. - **God without Jesus** — Judaism. Islam. Deism. Most of the world, for most of history. - **Jesus without God** — Unitarians. Historical-Jesus scholars. The reading I gave you in my views: Jesus as a *man*, an extraordinary one, but a man — teacher, rabbi, activist, executed for telling the truth. The bravest reading, not the least. - **The Holy Ghost without the Trinity** — Unitarians again. The Spirit as God's *active presence* in the world, not a second person. Hence the name: **Uni**-tarian. One God. Not three. - **All four separately** — and the church loses its grip on you the moment you realize you can believe *any* of these without believing *all* of them. ### The Trinity isn't even in the Bible Say it louder: **the word "Trinity" appears nowhere in the Bible.** The doctrine didn't exist when Jesus was alive. It was developed over centuries and *voted into existence* at the **Council of Nicaea (325)** and the **Council of Constantinople (381)** — by committees of bishops, three hundred years after the man died, in a fight about Greek metaphysics that most of them barely understood. Jesus never heard of the Trinity. Paul never heard of the Trinity. The apostles never heard of the Trinity. The Trinity is a *fourth-century legal settlement* wearing a first-century costume. And the textual kicker — the most famous Trinity proof-text, **Matthew 28:19** ("in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost")? The early church historian **Eusebius quotes the verse in its shorter form — "in my name" — with no Trinity at all.** The verse that built the doctrine may itself be a later addition. The telephone game strikes again, and this time it made a whole doctrine. So: separate the four, and what's left is Unitarianism — **one God** (mine happens to be a piece of shit, but He's real), **Jesus as a brave man**, **the Bible as a storybook**, **the Spirit as presence**. Four separate beliefs, held honestly, welded together by nobody. And the punchline everyone knows: **the difference between a cult and a religion is size and power.** A religion is a cult that won. The church I grew up around? I gave you the full checklist in Part IX — authoritarian, us-vs-them, controlled information, guilt and fear, financial exploitation, groupthink. Check. Check. Check. The biggest, oldest, most successful cult in human history, and I said it with love, sort of. ### DeMolay is a cult. I was in it. And I still learned things. Now the part that's going to make the lodge brothers mad, and I say it as an alum: **DeMolay — the Masonic youth order I was in — is a cult.** Not a *dangerous* one. A *benign* one. But by the definition? Check the boxes: - **Ritual initiation** — degrees, ceremonies, secret words. You're initiated, not just enrolled. - **Secret knowledge** — there are things you learn only at each degree, in a closed room. Information control, structurally. - **Hierarchy and authority** — adult Masons directing teenagers, older members over younger ones. - **Moral indoctrination** — the seven cardinal virtues drilled in at every meeting: filial love, reverence, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanliness, patriotism. - **Us-vs-them identity** — a strong in-group, its own symbols, its own language, its own handshakes, its own patron martyr (Jacques de Molay — a man the church burned for refusing to lie, which remains the best branding in history). - **Loyalty** — you pledge yourself to the order. By the textbook definition: yes. Cult-shaped. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. LMFAO. **But.** Here's the honest second half: it was a *good* cult. You went home to your family every night — no isolation. Dues were pocket change — no financial exploitation. Nobody threatened you with eternal consequences — no fear-based compliance. The leaders were volunteers — no guru. And the indoctrination was genuinely good content: **leadership, public speaking, civic duty, community service, brotherhood, keeping your word.** I learned things in that order that I still use — how to run a meeting, how to speak in front of a room, how to serve a community, how to honor your parents and keep your promises. The *form* was questionable. The *product* was real. And here's the lesson I take from it, the same lesson I take from church: **you can take the good from a flawed container.** You can be inside a cult-shaped thing and come out with skills and values and friendships and a moral framework — and still know, the whole time, that it's a cult. The container doesn't have to be perfect for the content to be valuable. And the content doesn't obligate you to defend the container. Extract the lesson. Drop the leash. **Form is not content.** And the meta-irony is too good to waste: DeMolay honors a man burned alive by the church — the original cult — and the order that honors him is itself cult-shaped. His full name matters: **Pontius** is his *family name* — he was a member of the **gens Pontia**, an old Roman aristocratic clan — and **Pilatus** is his *cognomen*, his nickname, possibly from *pilum* ("javelin") or *pileus* ("cap"). The Jewish writers **Philo** and **Josephus** describe a violent governor who executed people without trial, massacred Samaritans, and provoked riots. The "I wash my hands" Pilate is the editing room's Pilate. **Even the villain of the story got whitewashed by the telephone game.** The man who killed Jesus was rewritten as the sympathetic one. Nobody is safe from the editors. LMFAO. ### After Judea: the recall and the legends Pilate's brutality eventually caught up with him. After the Samaria massacre (~36 CE), he was **recalled to Rome**. By the time he arrived, Tiberius was dead and **Caligula** ruled.
